11/19/09 > “Congratulations” Middle School

Middle School Student Council joined many other schools across the nation in participating in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Pasta for Pennies program this fall. This was the fourth year for Middle School to participate. Funds raised will help to find cures for blood cancers and support patients and their families. Middle School students raised $10,407.64 in three weeks. Students collected money during their lunch period classes. Although it was a competition, the students were also rewarded with the knowledge that they are helping to make a difference in the lives of others suffering with blood cancer. The winning class, Pampolina/Holleran, will receive a Pasta Italiano Lunch party from the Olive Garden.

11/16/09 > Anti-Bullying Week

"It's Cool to Care... "Stand Up! (to bullying)"

November 16-20: Anti-Bullying Week

The importance of the physical and emotional safety of each student is paramount in Lumberton.

We take the issues of bullying very seriously. Bullying is another name for harassment; it is the willful, conscious desire to hurt, threaten, or frighten someone.  Bullying can be physical, verbal, or emotional. Bullying happens when a person or group of people want to have power over another and use their power to get their way, at the expense of someone else.  Bullying can also happen through cyberspace through the use of emails, text messaging, and other less direct methods.

"IT'S COOL TO CARE "

is an anti-bullying initiative in Lumberton ISD that is aimed at taking a positive approach to the problem .  With the help of everyone in our school system, we will be successful in creating a school in which each student is treated well and feels safe.  Each counselor/assistant principal has planned activities for their campus.

As a district, on Nov. 18th., each person is asked to wear blue for " Blue Wednesday "  as a statement of peace and solidarity in support of creating schools and communities where " It's Cool to Care ".

10/23/09 > Mighty Raider Band
Our Mighty Raider Band advanced to the Area F UIL Marching Contest to be held this Saturday at Galena Park ISD Stadium.  My thanks to all of you whose support made this possible.  This is the 10th year in a row for the band to receive a first division at our region marching contest.  They've accomplished this 13 out of the past 14 years.

Saturday, October 24th, our band will march at 12:30.  There are 13 bands in the contest.  The two bands with the highest scores will advance to state.  There will only be one round of marching since there are only 13 bands.  14 or more bands require a prelims/finals format.

The address for Galena Park ISD Stadium 15025 Wallisville Rd. in Houston.  Zip is 77049 if you want to google map it.
Directions are easy:  Take I-10 to Houston.  Exit Beltway 8 North. Go North on Beltway 8.  Take Wallisville Road exit (2nd exit, I think).  Turn left on Wallisville Road.  The stadium will be located on your right about 3/4 of a mile from the beltway.

Again, my thanks to all of you for your support of our program.  I hope you can make it Saturday.  It should be a great contest with great weather.  The contest starts at 12:15 and will finish at 4:00.  Admission is $3.00

Lumberton - Ashley Sims, of the Lumberton FFA chapter, was awarded the Lone Star FFA Degree at the 81st annual Texas FFA Convention held July 7-10, in Dallas, Texas. The Lone Star FFA Degree is the highest degree bestowed by the Texas FFA.

The Lone Star FFA Degree recognizes the members' agricultural awareness, leadership, career development and active involvement in the FFA organization. Sims was one of more than 1,350 FFA members receiving this esteemed degree.
Dallas has been home to 13 Texas FFA conventions. Five of the first six Future Farmer conventions, 1929-33, were held in Dallas in conjunction with the State Fair of Texas. This year, the Texas FFA made history in Dallas. Members set an all-time attendance record with 11,760 members and guests, surpassing the record set at the 79th Annual Texas FFA Convention held in Corpus Christi with 10,321 members and guests.

The Texas FFA has evolved from an organization focusing primarily on production agriculture, to a broader-based encompassing organization that addresses the needs and interests of students in urban and suburban schools in addition to the rural communities from which FFA rose in 1929.

The transformation of FFA is evident through programs like the Texas FFA Agriscience Fair. The agriscience fair fuses the traditional science fair with agriculture. FFA members conduct cutting edge agricultural research to compete in categories such as biochemistry, environmental science, zoology, botany and engineering.

The Texas FFA is one of the nation's largest state FFA associations with a membership of more than 63,000 and 1,000 local FFA chapters. FFA gives students the opportunity to apply practical classroom knowledge to real world experiences through local, state and national competitions. For more information about the Texas FFA Association visit www.texasffa.org .
